Major Wire Closing machine repairs
Probably the largest wire rope closing machine – CM3 in Australasia required several repairs [as production intervals allowed]
on tyres / discs 1 and 2. Small sections or scallops were coming away from these tyres in service – causing great consternation to both production and maintenance managers. These sections can easily jam / damage the very expensive rollers underneath and halt production. Dismantle and replacement / recommissioning would be a major task as all wiring would have to redone – and there a several kilometres of wiring. Works included NDT Magnetic particle cracktest on tyre surfaces. Cut out 8 damaged sections with auto pusher drill equipment and fit special masterlocks / metalock keys as required - hand finish to original profile. Works were carried out over weekends and public holidays so as not to disrupt manufacturing.
